What Are Nickel Alloy Fasteners
Stainless and duplex steels are, at their core, iron-based alloys with chromium, nickel, and molybdenum added to improve corrosion resistance. Nickel alloys flip that relationship — nickel is the base, not the addition — and that difference matters. Nickel can hold far higher levels of chromium and molybdenum in solid solution than iron can, which is precisely why nickel-base alloys can survive environments that would rapidly consume even the most resistant iron-based stainless steels: strongly reducing acids, sour gas with high H2S content, chlorides at elevated temperature, and sustained service well above 500°C.
There isn’t one “nickel alloy” — there are four distinct families, each built around a different base chemistry and a different problem: Inconel (nickel-chromium, for high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance), Incoloy (nickel-iron-chromium, a cost-effective step up from stainless for sour service and heat), Monel (nickel-copper, for seawater and hydrofluoric acid), and Hastelloy (nickel-molybdenum-chromium, for the most severe acid environments, whether reducing, oxidizing, or both).
