Retaining Rings

Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai — ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer and exporter of spring steel retaining rings referenced under Military Standard MS14181. A retaining ring solves a fastening problem no threaded or headed fastener can — seating into a machined groove on a shaft or in a bore to hold a bearing, gear, or other component axially in position, without adding any real length, weight, or bulk to the assembly.

Holding Position Without Adding Bulk

Why a Groove-Seated Ring, Not a Nut or Collar

A retaining ring exists for exactly the situations where a nut, shoulder, or collar would be the wrong answer — where axial space is genuinely tight, where adding threaded length to a shaft isn’t practical, or where a component needs to be held in position on a shaft or in a bore using the absolute minimum of extra material. Instead of clamping or threading, the ring compresses (for a shaft) or expands (for a bore) as it’s installed with specialized pliers, then seats permanently into a pre-machined groove where it holds its shape and blocks axial movement.

That groove-seating mechanism is genuinely different from every other fastener category we manufacture — there’s no torque value, no thread engagement, no clamping force in the conventional sense. The ring’s holding capacity comes entirely from its own spring temper and the shear strength of the groove wall it bears against, which is why groove depth and ring thickness both have to be correctly matched to the actual axial load the assembly will see.

Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our retaining ring range is manufactured to correct spring temper and dimensional tolerance, verified under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.

Why Buyers Specify MS14181

Where This Standard Genuinely Applies

Zero Added Assembly Length

Seats into an existing groove, adding no meaningful bulk to the shaft or bore assembly.

No Threading or Clamping Required

Holds position purely through groove engagement and spring temper, no torque value needed.

Correct Spring Temper for Reliable Seating

Manufactured to spring temper that seats consistently and stays seated under vibration.

Verified Thickness & Shear Capacity

Batch testing confirms genuine ring thickness and shear capacity for the ordered groove size.

Ring Types We Manufacture

Internal vs External Retaining Rings

External (Shaft)

External Retaining Ring

Compressed inward for installation onto a shaft groove, expanding to seat in place once released.

Internal (Bore)

Internal Retaining Ring

Compressed inward for installation into a bore groove, expanding outward against the groove wall once released.

Ear Style

Standard Ear-Style Design

Small lug ears designed for specialized retaining ring pliers, allowing clean, controlled compression during install/removal.

Matching Ring Type to Application

Internal vs External Selection Guide

The right ring type depends entirely on whether the component is retained on a shaft or inside a bore. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
