Why Self-Locking Genuinely Matters
A standard hex nut, correctly torqued, resists loosening perfectly well in most applications — the friction between mating threads and between the nut face and joint is genuinely sufficient for the enormous majority of general assembly, and FF-N-836 exists exactly for that world.
Continuous vibration changes that equation entirely. Under sustained cyclic vibration — the kind an aircraft structure or engine mount sees constantly in service — even a correctly torqued standard nut can gradually walk itself loose over time, because vibration momentarily and repeatedly relieves the friction the joint depends on. A self-locking nut solves this with an added mechanical feature: either a nylon insert ring that grips the bolt thread independent of clamping tension, or a slightly deformed thread section that creates continuous prevailing resistance, so the nut resists backing off even after the joint has lost some clamping force.
