What Is a DIN 126 Plain Washer
Every flat washer does the same basic job — spread the clamping load of a bolt head or nut over a wider bearing area than the fastener alone would cover, and stop the fastener chewing into a softer or coated surface as it’s tightened. Where DIN 126 differs from the more commonly known DIN 125 is purely in the inner hole size: DIN 125 assumes a fairly close-fitting bolt hole, while DIN 126 is sized with a noticeably larger inner diameter, matched to the coarser clearance holes typical of structural steel connections, “black” (unfinished) bolts, and general fabrication where drilling tolerance is looser by design.
That larger clearance matters in practice — try to fit a DIN 125 washer over a bolt that’s gone through an oversized structural clearance hole and it may not seat flat or fully cover the hole edge; DIN 126 is dimensioned specifically to still work correctly in that situation. It’s the washer to specify whenever the bolt hole itself is expected to run wider than precision-machined tolerance.

Standard nominal dimensions and approximate weight by bolt size — inner diameter (d1) is the figure to check first against your actual drilled hole size, since it runs noticeably wider than a DIN 125 washer of the same nominal bolt size.
