What Is a DIN 94 Split Pin
A split pin — cotter pin in some regional terminology — starts life as a length of semi-round wire folded back on itself, creating two legs joined at a rounded head. DIN 94 defines the standard dimensions for this shape: the eye or head diameter, the leg diameter, and the overall length, sized to pass cleanly through a matching drilled hole in a castellated nut and bolt, a clevis pin, or any shaft needing positive axial retention.
The locking action is deliberately final and impossible to mistake for “half-done.” Once the pin is pushed through the hole, the two legs are bent apart — typically one leg forward over the nut face, one leg back along the bolt or pin — so removing it again requires straightening both legs and pulling the pin back out. That physical, visible commitment is exactly why split pins remain standard wherever a locking failure has real safety consequences: axle nuts, wheel bearing retention, clevis and pin joints, aircraft-adjacent ground equipment, and any castellated nut assembly specified with drilled bolts for that reason.

Standard nominal dimensions and approximate weight by pin diameter — the nominal diameter (d) should match the drilled hole size in your bolt, nut, or pin, and length (l) is selected so the legs have enough material to bend fully apart after installation. Weight is given per 100 pieces at a mid-range reference length; actual weight scales with the length ordered.
