What Is a DIN 95 Slotted Round Head Wood Screws
Wood screws and machine screws solve fundamentally different problems. A machine screw threads into a pre-cut internal thread of matching pitch; a wood screw creates its own thread path as it’s driven, cutting into the surrounding fibres of the timber with a coarse, widely-spaced thread and a sharp gimlet point that starts the hole and draws the screw in as it turns. DIN 95 defines that geometry paired specifically with a rounded, domed head and a single straight slot drive.
The round head is a deliberate design choice, not a compromise. Unlike a countersunk wood screw, which needs a pre-drilled countersink and sits flush with the surface, a round head sits proud and visible — appropriate, and often preferred, in furniture assembly, hinge fitting, and cabinetry where the fastener is meant to be seen rather than hidden. The tapered shank beneath the head also means the screw draws two pieces of timber tightly together as it seats, rather than just resisting pull-out.
