What Is Titanium Grade 2 (CP Ti)
Titanium Grade 2 is the most widely used of the four commercially pure (CP, unalloyed) titanium grades defined under ASTM B265/B348. Unlike titanium alloys such as Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V), Grade 2 contains no deliberate alloying elements — its properties come from controlling interstitial oxygen, iron, carbon, nitrogen, and hydrogen content within tight limits, which is precisely what makes it so consistently weldable, formable, and corrosion resistant.
Chemical composition (max, wt%): Oxygen 0.25, Iron 0.30, Carbon 0.08, Nitrogen 0.03, Hydrogen 0.015, balance Titanium. This tight interstitial control is what separates Grade 2 from Grade 1 (softer, more ductile) and Grade 3/4 (higher strength, lower ductility) within the CP titanium family.
Mechanical properties: minimum tensile strength of 345 MPa (50 ksi), minimum yield strength of 275 MPa (40 ksi), and a minimum elongation of 20% — giving Grade 2 a genuinely useful balance of moderate strength with excellent ductility and formability, at a density of just 4.51 g/cm³, roughly 40% that of steel.
Where Titanium Grade 2 Genuinely Earns Its Cost
Corrosion Resistance in Chlorides
A stable, self-healing titanium oxide film gives Grade 2 resistance to seawater, chloride solutions, and oxidizing acids that outperforms austenitic stainless in sustained marine exposure.
High Strength-to-Weight Ratio
At roughly 40% the density of steel while matching or exceeding common structural steel strength grades, Grade 2 removes weight from an assembly without giving up load capacity.
Non-Magnetic Behaviour
Fully non-magnetic under all conditions, making Grade 2 the reliable default for MRI-adjacent equipment, sensitive instrumentation, and shipboard compass-safe fastening zones.
Biocompatibility
ISO 5832-2 compliant CP titanium is the standard material for surgical implant fastening, given its proven long-term tissue compatibility and absence of an allergenic response in most patients.
Titanium Grade 2 vs Stainless Steel Fasteners
Titanium Grade 2 is not simply “better stainless” — it’s a different set of trade-offs. Where corrosion life, weight, and non-magnetic behaviour justify the material cost, Grade 2 pays for itself; where the application doesn’t need those specific properties, 316 stainless remains the more economical, equally sound choice. The comparison below is the one we walk through with buyers before quoting, so the material selection is deliberate rather than assumed.
| Property | Titanium Grade 2 | Stainless Steel 316 |
|---|---|---|
| Density | 4.51 g/cm³ | 7.98 g/cm³ (~77% heavier) |
| Tensile Strength (min) | 345 MPa | 515 MPa |
| Yield Strength (min) | 275 MPa | 205 MPa |
| Chloride / Seawater Resistance | Excellent — no pitting | Good, but pitting risk over time |
| Magnetic Behaviour | Fully non-magnetic | Mostly non-magnetic (may vary with cold work) |
| Biocompatibility | ISO 5832-2 implant grade | Not typically implant grade |
| Galvanic Compatibility with Carbon Fibre | Good — standard in aerospace | Requires isolation in most cases |
| Relative Material Cost | Higher | Lower |
