Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai — ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer of square head bolts to DIN 478 and DIN 479. A full flat square head — not the domed head and square-neck shoulder of a carriage bolt, but the complete traditional square wrenching head that predates the hex bolt as the standard engineering fastener. Still specified today for rail track fastening, agricultural machinery, and heritage restoration work where a square head is the correct historical or functional match. Carbon steel, alloy steel, and Stainless 316L. M6–M36. Full MTC, NABL. Export 50+ countries.

Why a Traditional Head Shape Is Still Correctly Specified Today

Anatomy of a Square Head Bolt — Larger Flats, Historical Continuity

A square head bolt has a full, flat, four-sided head — the complete traditional wrenching form that was the standard bolt head shape in engineering and construction before the hexagon became the near-universal convention. Unlike a carriage bolt, which pairs a rounded, non-wrenchable dome head with a small square shoulder purely for anti-rotation embedding into wood, a square head bolt’s entire head is the square — fully wrenchable, exactly as a hex head is, just with four flats instead of six.

The practical consequence of four flats rather than six, at the same across-corners dimension, is a larger flat-to-flat wrenching surface per side — each of the four faces is wider than any single face of an equivalent hex head would be. This was historically significant when wrenches were simpler, hand-forged tools rather than precision-machined sockets: a wider flat gave more secure hand-tool engagement and was more forgiving of minor tool wear or imprecise fit. That same wider-flat characteristic is why square head bolts remain specified in applications with heavy, unrefined tooling in the field — traditional rail maintenance tools, older agricultural equipment wrenches, and heritage hardware matching historical fastener appearance.

Square head bolts persist today primarily in three specific, continuing use cases rather than as a general-purpose alternative to hex: rail and track fastening (fishplate bolts joining rail sections, where the square head’s shape and appearance match century-old railway engineering convention still in active maintenance use), agricultural machinery built to older mechanical designs still in service, and heritage or restoration hardware where matching the original fastener’s visual appearance is itself a project requirement.

Four Reasons Square Head Bolts Are Still Specified

Why Square Head Bolts — Tradition With a Continuing Practical Basis

01

Standard Specification for Rail Track Fastening

Fishplate bolts joining rail sections at track joints have specified square heads as a matter of railway engineering convention for well over a century — maintenance crews, tooling, and replacement stock across rail networks are built around this specification, making square head the correct and expected choice for this application rather than a legacy inconvenience.

02

Matching Older Agricultural and Industrial Machinery

Equipment built to older mechanical designs — particularly agricultural machinery with a long service life — was frequently specified with square head bolts throughout, and replacement fasteners for these machines are correctly specified to match the original square head rather than substituting a hex head that may not correctly fit surrounding castings or brackets designed around the square profile.

03

Heritage and Restoration Authenticity

Restoration projects on historic buildings, vintage machinery, and heritage structures often specify square head bolts specifically to match the original fastener appearance — a visual and historical accuracy requirement distinct from any mechanical performance advantage, but a genuine and continuing specification driver in restoration and conservation work.

04

Wider Flat Tolerates Basic Field Tooling

In field maintenance environments using simpler adjustable wrenches or older hand tools rather than precision sockets, a square head’s wider individual flats provide a more forgiving, secure grip than the narrower flats of an equivalent hex head — a practical benefit in exactly the kind of field maintenance conditions where square head bolts continue to be specified.

Three Bolt Head Shapes Often Confused With One Another

Square Head Bolt vs Carriage Bolt vs Hex Head Bolt

Each solves a genuinely different fastening problem despite superficial visual similarity.

Full Wrenchable Square · This Page

Square Head Bolt (DIN 478/479)

Entire head is a flat, wrenchable square — no dome, no separate shoulder. Driven and held with a wrench on the flats exactly like a hex head bolt, just with four wider faces instead of six narrower ones.

Use for: Rail track fastening, older agricultural and industrial machinery, heritage restoration matching original fastener appearance.
Domed Head + Square Neck · Different Product

Carriage Bolt

Rounded, non-wrenchable dome head sits above a small square-section neck that embeds into a matching square hole in wood — providing anti-rotation entirely through the neck, not the head. The head itself is never gripped by a tool.

Use for: Wood-to-wood or wood-to-metal through-bolted connections requiring a smooth, snag-free exposed head. View Carriage Bolts →
Standard Modern Convention

Hex Head Bolt

Six narrower flats at the same across-corners dimension, compatible with the vast, standardised range of modern socket and wrench tooling — the general-purpose default for the overwhelming majority of contemporary fastening applications.

Use for: General machinery and equipment assembly with no specific square-head historical or standard-compliance requirement. View Machine Bolts →

Hex or square nuts matched to square head bolt thread size and grade — track and agricultural applications commonly pair square head bolts with standard hex nuts for the nut side, since anti-rotation is provided by the head, not the nut.
