Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai — ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer of heavy hex nuts to ASME B18.2.2 and ASTM A194. Larger across-flats dimension and greater thickness than a standard finished hex nut of the same thread size — engineered specifically to be torqued to the high preload that pressure vessel, piping flange, and structural bolted connections demand, without the wrench rounding the corners or the thread stripping under load. Matched to ASTM A193 stud bolt grades (B7, B8, B8M) across the same size range referenced throughout our stud bolt range. Carbon steel, alloy steel, and Stainless 316/316L. M12–M100. Full MTC, NABL. Larger and Thicker Isn’t Arbitrary — Both Dimensions Solve a Specific Problem

Anatomy of a Heavy Hex Nut — Built for High Preload, Not Just High Strength

A heavy hex nut has two dimensions increased relative to a standard finished hex nut of the same thread size: a larger across-flats dimension (the distance between opposite wrench-flat faces) and greater overall thickness. Neither increase is cosmetic — both exist to solve specific problems that arise once a connection requires very high preload, the kind demanded by high-pressure piping flanges, pressure vessel closures, and heavily loaded structural steel joints.

The larger across-flats dimension increases the contact surface area between the wrench (or hydraulic torque tool socket) and the nut’s flats. At the very high torque values required to properly preload a large-diameter high-strength stud, a standard-size hex nut’s flats can deform or round under the tool’s gripping force before the target torque is even reached — a failure mode that ruins the nut and can compromise the joint. The larger heavy hex flats distribute that gripping force over more contact area, tolerating the higher torque without rounding.

The greater thickness exists to guarantee full thread engagement length even with high-strength stud materials. A thin nut engaging only a few threads can strip those threads under high preload before the stud itself reaches its rated tensile capacity — the joint fails at the nut, not at the stronger stud, wasting the stud’s full strength potential. A heavy hex nut’s additional thickness ensures enough thread engagement length that the nut can develop the stud’s full rated tensile strength before any thread-stripping failure mode becomes possible — this is precisely why heavy hex nuts are always specified as the mating nut for the ASTM A193 stud bolts used throughout our stud bolt range.

Standard Finished Hex Nut Heavy Hex Nut Larger Across-Flats + Thicker Wider Across-Flats More Thread Engagement = full stud tensile strength developed before thread-stripping becomes possible
Four Reasons Pressure-Retaining Joints Specify Heavy Hex Nuts

Why Heavy Hex Nuts — Matched Capacity Across the Whole Joint

01

The Nut Should Never Be the Weak Link

A bolted joint is only as strong as its weakest component — if the stud is rated to a very high tensile strength but the nut strips its threads first, the joint’s actual safe capacity is governed by the nut, not the stud, and the stud’s full rated strength is wasted. Heavy hex nuts are dimensioned specifically so that thread stripping never occurs before the stud reaches its own rated tensile failure — keeping the mating stud, not the nut, as the governing capacity of the joint.

02

Withstands the Torque Required for High-Pressure Sealing

Pressure vessel and high-pressure piping flange connections require very high, precisely controlled bolt preload to compress the gasket and maintain a leak-tight seal under process pressure and thermal cycling. Achieving that preload demands high applied torque — torque that would round a standard-size nut’s flats before reaching target, but that a heavy hex nut’s larger wrenching surface tolerates without deformation.

03

Standardised Matching to A193 Stud Grades

ASTM A194 heavy hex nut grades are specifically designed and published to correspond one-to-one with ASTM A193 stud bolt grades — Grade 2H matched to B7, Grade 8/8M matched to B8/B8M — removing ambiguity from procurement and ensuring the nut and stud combination has a jointly-verified, code-recognised strength rating rather than an assumed compatibility.

04

Recognised Across Piping, Pressure Vessel, and Structural Codes

Heavy hex nuts to ASTM A194 are the default specification referenced across ASME piping and pressure vessel codes, and heavy hex nuts to ASME B18.2.2 dimensional standard are equally standard in structural steel connections — giving engineers a single, universally recognised nut category to specify across piping, pressure equipment, and structural bolting without needing project-specific custom dimensional agreement.

Choosing Correctly Between the Two Most Common Hex Nut Categories

Heavy Hex Nut vs Finished (Machine) Hex Nut

The same thread size in each category is a genuinely different part — larger, thicker, and rated for a different service class.

High Preload · Pressure-Rated · This Page

Heavy Hex Nut (ASTM A194)

Larger across-flats and greater thickness than the finished hex equivalent at the same thread size. Designed for high preload, high torque, and full-strength development of high-tensile stud bolts. The standard nut for pressure-retaining and heavily loaded structural connections.

Use for: Piping flange bolting, pressure vessel closures, structural steel connections, and any joint using ASTM A193 stud bolts.
General Assembly · Not Pressure-Rated

Finished Hex Nut (Machine Bolt Nut)

Smaller across-flats and thinner than a heavy hex nut at the same thread size — the standard nut paired with general-purpose machine bolts. Adequate thread engagement and torque tolerance for general machinery and equipment assembly, but not dimensioned for the very high preload of pressure-retaining service.

Use for: General machinery assembly, equipment mounting, and non-pressure-retaining connections — never substitute for a heavy hex nut in piping, pressure vessel, or structural applications specifying ASTM A194.

Heavy Hex Nut Standards Coverage

Same ISO 9001:2015 quality system as our complete fastener range. Dimensional and grade compliance verified against ASME B18.2.2 / ASTM A194 on every production lot.

ASME Standards
ASME B18.2.2
The primary dimensional standard for heavy hex nuts — specifies across-flats dimension, thickness, and thread size relationship across the M12–M100 range, distinct from and larger than the corresponding ASME B18.2.2 finished hex nut dimensions at the same thread size.
ASME B18.2.2Heavy HexM12–M100
ASTM Standards
ASTM A194
The primary material and property class standard for heavy hex nuts used in pressure-retaining and high-temperature service — covering Grade 2H, 7, 7M, 8, 8A, 8M, and 8MA, each with published hardness, proof load, and matched stud bolt grade requirements.
ASTM A194Grade 2H/7/8/8M
Companion Standard
ASTM A193 (Matched Studs)
ASTM A193 covers the stud bolt grades (B7, B8, B8M) that A194 heavy hex nuts are specifically matched to — the two standards are always referenced together on piping and pressure vessel bolting schedules, since nut and stud grade compatibility is fundamental to the joint’s rated capacity.
ASTM A193Matched Studs
Flange Standards
ASME B16.5 / B16.47
ASME B16.5 (pipe flanges NPS 24 and smaller) and B16.47 (larger diameter flanges) specify the bolt circle, bolt hole size, and quantity that determine heavy hex nut and stud bolt sizing and quantity for a given flange rating and pipe size — the flange standard drives the fastener specification, not the reverse.
ASME B16.5ASME B16.47
ISO Equivalent
ISO 4033 (Metric Heavy Hex)
ISO 4033 provides the metric-dimensioned equivalent heavy hex nut standard for projects specified to ISO/metric convention rather than ASME/ASTM inch-based standards, maintaining the same larger across-flats and thickness principle for high-preload metric bolting.
