Metric Threaded Rod

Metric threaded rod is genuinely specified by a property class number, such as 8.8 or 10.9, that directly and arithmetically encodes two real mechanical properties — the number before the decimal times 100 gives the minimum tensile strength in megapascals divided by 10, and the number after the decimal gives the ratio of yield strength to tensile strength — making it possible to calculate a rod’s actual guaranteed tensile and yield strength directly from its property class marking.

Here is why this matters. Because threaded rod, unlike a headed bolt, genuinely has no head to physically stamp this property class marking on, a length of threaded rod is genuinely unmarked along its own body in normal use. The property class is established and documented at the mill level through certification, not through a marking readable on an individual piece once it is cut, installed, or separated from its original packaging.

A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because the rod itself carries no physical property class marking, buyers must maintain traceability back to the mill certification and packaging documentation for the specific batch used, rather than relying on visual inspection of an installed or loose length of rod to confirm its property class. If rod from different property classes becomes mixed or separated from its documentation, there is genuinely no way to distinguish them by looking at the rod alone, making batch segregation and documentation genuinely essential for structural or safety-critical use.
