Why “Seated and Torqued” Genuinely Isn’t Proof
A Wedge Anchor is genuinely installed by drilling a hole into hardened, existing concrete, then driving the anchor’s tapered stud further into its expansion clip so the clip is forced to expand radially outward against the wall of the drilled hole. Unlike a headed anchor bolt, which is cast into fresh concrete before it cures, a wedge anchor’s holding capacity comes from this radial expansion against a pre-existing hole, not from bearing against a breakout cone in fresh concrete.
Here is why this matters. Because this radial expansion genuinely depends on the drilled hole being the correct diameter, if the hole is oversized, even slightly, from a worn or incorrect drill bit, the expansion clip genuinely cannot make full contact against the hole wall, and the anchor’s real holding capacity is significantly reduced. Critically, this reduced capacity is genuinely not visible from the outside, since the anchor can still seat and torque up normally even with an oversized hole underneath.
A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because this expansion cannot be verified by external visual inspection after installation, buyers and installers must confirm drill bit diameter and condition are correct before drilling, not after, and should confirm whether proof-testing, such as torque or tension testing installed anchors, is genuinely required for their application. An anchor that seats and torques up normally is not proof that it has achieved its full rated capacity, since an oversized hole can genuinely produce that same outward appearance with a substantially weaker actual installation.
