Hex Bolts
Why the Smooth Shank Genuinely Resists Shear
A true hex bolt is genuinely defined by having a partially threaded shank — a deliberate unthreaded “grip length” section between the head and the start of the threads. This is different from a hex head cap screw, typically threaded closer to the head or fully threaded and torqued directly into a tapped hole. A bolt is designed to pass through clearance holes in two or more parts and be tightened with a mating nut, and the unthreaded shank is a deliberate feature, not a manufacturing shortcut.
Here is why that unthreaded shank matters specifically for shear-loaded joints. The full-diameter, smooth shank is genuinely stronger in shear than the threaded portion, because the thread’s root diameter — the smallest cross-section within the threaded length — is measurably less than the bolt’s nominal, full shank diameter. If a joint is expected to resist genuine lateral, shear loads at the interface between the clamped parts, specifying a grip length that positions this full-diameter, unthreaded shank exactly across that shear plane provides genuinely more shear capacity than if the weaker, reduced root-diameter threads happened to fall across that same plane instead.
A genuine, honest precision requirement follows directly. Because the unthreaded shank length is fixed at manufacture, ordering the wrong bolt length for a given joint’s stack-up thickness can genuinely place the thread-to-shank transition right at the shear plane instead of clean shank — the worst possible position, since that transition is itself a stress concentration — or can leave threads engaging the shear plane entirely. Hex bolt grip length must genuinely be calculated against the actual total thickness of the parts being joined, not approximated — a real precision requirement that simply doesn’t exist for a fully threaded screw, since there’s no grip length to calculate at all.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our hex bolt range is manufactured and verified for grip length and thread-to-shank transition quality under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
A Note on Confirming Actual Joint Stack-Up Thickness
Please confirm the actual total thickness of the parts being clamped when requesting a quote — grip length genuinely must position the smooth shank across the shear plane, not calculated approximately.
Where This Fastener Genuinely Applies
Genuine Grip Length Calculation
We calculate grip length genuinely against your actual stack-up thickness.
Shear Plane Positioning
We confirm the smooth shank genuinely lands across your shear plane.
Bolt vs Screw Guidance
We recommend a full-thread screw honestly when shear isn’t a real concern.
Verified Dimensions & Mechanicals
Batch testing confirms genuine grip length and thread compliance for every lot.
Hex Bolt vs Fully Threaded Screw — Quick Reference
Confirming whether your joint genuinely resists lateral, shear loads at the clamped interface, or is loaded purely in tension. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
| Aspect | Hex Bolt | Fully Threaded Screw |
|---|---|---|
| Shank Design | Genuine unthreaded grip length | Fully threaded, no smooth shank |
| Shear Plane Strength | Genuinely higher, full diameter | Lower, reduced root diameter |
| Length Precision Needed | Genuinely critical, grip length calculated | Less critical, no grip length concept |
