Our standard pipe fittings are typically specified by matching pipe schedule — a wall-thickness designation like Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 — with the fitting’s bore sized to accept that schedule. High pressure fittings are genuinely different: they are forged and classified by a size-independent pressure class rating — 2000#, 3000#, 6000#, 9000# — rather than by pipe schedule alone. The same nominal pipe size fitting is manufactured with substantially different, genuinely thicker body and wall dimensions depending on which pressure class is ordered, independent of what pipe schedule happens to be used elsewhere in the line.
This is exactly why bore-to-pipe fit matters so much more critically at high pressure than in standard fittings. Extreme internal pressure concentrates stress dramatically at any discontinuity or gap in the flow path, so a high-pressure socket-weld fitting’s bore must be matched almost exactly to the actual outside diameter of the specific pipe schedule being used. Even a small mismatch that would be inconsequential in a low-pressure threaded or standard socketweld joint can become a genuine stress-concentration point and crack initiation site under repeated high-pressure cycling. This is why high-pressure fitting orders must specify the exact pipe schedule being connected, not just the nominal pipe size — a precision requirement genuinely more critical than for standard fittings.
A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because high-pressure fittings are solid forged components, not fabricated from rolled and welded plate the way larger buttweld fittings are, they are genuinely only practical and economical up to a limited size range — commonly up to about 4 inch nominal bore. For larger diameter high-pressure lines, the piping industry genuinely shifts to buttweld construction with calculated wall thickness instead of forged small-bore fittings. Forged high-pressure fittings are not a solution that scales up to large-diameter high-pressure piping.
