Lap Joint Flanges
Why Rotational Freedom Genuinely Helps
Unlike every other flange already covered — weld neck, nozzle, long weld neck, reducing, NIPO — which are permanently welded to the pipe or vessel at that connection, a lap joint flange is genuinely a two-piece system. A separate stub end — a short pipe piece with a curved, flared back — is welded to the pipe or vessel, and a loose flange ring is never welded to anything at all. The ring simply slips over the stub end and its inner face bears against the stub’s flared back to transmit bolting force, while remaining completely free to rotate.
This rotational freedom creates a real, distinct installation advantage. Because the flange ring can rotate freely around the stub end before the bolts are tightened, the bolt holes can be freely aligned to match the mating flange’s bolt pattern without needing to rotate or reposition the welded pipe itself. This is genuinely valuable when the pipe’s rotational orientation is fixed by other constraints — a pre-set pipe run, for instance — and the bolt holes on both flanges must still line up precisely. A welded flange, once welded, has its bolt hole orientation permanently fixed and cannot be adjusted at all.
A genuine, honest limitation follows directly. Because the flange ring itself never contacts the process fluid — that surface is entirely the stub end’s flared face — a lap joint flange assembly is not suited to fully corrosive or high-purity, hygienic service the way a solid weld neck flange’s fully wetted, single-material construction is. And because the connection relies on the ring simply bearing against the stub end’s back face rather than a continuous weld, a lap joint flange genuinely carries a lower pressure rating than an equivalent weld neck flange of the same size and material — a real, honest trade-off for the rotational convenience it provides.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our lap joint flange range is manufactured and verified for stub end fit and ring bearing surface under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
A Note on Confirming Pressure Class & Corrosive Exposure
Please confirm your required pressure rating and whether the ring material needs to resist your process fluid, when requesting a quote — a lap joint flange’s lower rating and separate ring material genuinely matter here.
Where This Component Genuinely Applies
Genuine Stub End Fit-Up
We match stub end flare and ring bearing surface precisely.
Pressure Rating Guidance
We advise honestly on the rating gap versus a weld neck flange.
Ring Material Cost Savings
We confirm when a cheaper ring material genuinely applies alongside an alloy stub.
Verified Dimensions & Mechanicals
Batch testing confirms genuine stub end and ring compliance for every lot.
Lap Joint Flange vs Weld Neck Flange — Quick Reference
Confirming whether your bolt-hole alignment genuinely needs adjustment after the pipe is fixed, or your service needs maximum pressure rating. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
| Aspect | Lap Joint Flange | Weld Neck Flange |
|---|---|---|
| Bolt Hole Rotation | Genuinely free, adjustable after fit-up | Permanently fixed once welded |
| Pressure Rating | Genuinely lower | Genuinely higher, full weld strength |
| Wetted Surface Material | Only the stub end, not the ring | Fully single-material, wetted throughout |
