Why a Shop Weld Is Genuinely Different
A NIPO flange is a shop-fabricated combination of two normally separate components — a short length of pipe, called a nipple, and a flange — joined together in the fabrication shop under controlled conditions before the assembly ever reaches the job site. This is genuinely different from installing a separate flange and a separate pipe nipple, which would otherwise need to be field-welded together after both pieces are already at the installation point.
This shop-versus-field distinction genuinely affects weld quality. Because the nipple-to-flange weld is done in a controlled shop environment — proper positioning, radiography inspection, and readily available welder qualification records — the joint is genuinely more likely to meet quality standards consistently. This shop weld can be pre-inspected and certified before shipment, whereas a field weld’s quality depends heavily on site conditions and is inspected only after the pipe run is already partly assembled, often in awkward, elevated, or confined positions.
A genuine, honest limitation follows directly from this fixed pre-assembly: because the nipple length is set at the time of shop fabrication, the exact stub-out length — the branch length from the main pipe or vessel to the flange face — must be specified accurately in advance. Unlike separately supplied flanges and pipe, where the installer can cut the pipe on-site to fit actual as-built dimensions, a wrong nipple length ordered as a NIPO flange cannot be corrected on site without cutting and re-welding — a genuine, honest planning consideration distinct from field-assembled flange-and-pipe combinations.
