Plates
Why Rolling Genuinely Shapes What You Get
Every fastener and flange already covered on this site arrives as a finished component with one specific, predetermined mechanical function built into its shape — a bolt’s thread, a flange’s bolt circle, a washer’s bearing area. A plate is genuinely different: it’s supplied as raw, flat, unformed rolled stock with no built-in mechanical function at all. Your own downstream fabrication — cutting, welding, machining, bending — determines what the material eventually becomes, whether that’s a pressure vessel shell, a structural gusset, a wear plate, or a machined component blank.
Being produced by rolling — passing hot or cold metal between rollers under pressure — rather than a fastener’s typically closer-toleranced forming or threading process, creates a genuine, honest consequence: plate thickness carries a wider, mill-standard tolerance band, and that tolerance can vary slightly across the width and length of a single plate, a real characteristic of the rolling process itself. This is why plates specified for precision-machined components often need a specific thickness tolerance class called out, distinct from the tighter, more uniform tolerance a fastener’s thread or bore would carry.
A further, genuine and honest consideration is grain direction. The rolling process elongates the material’s internal grain structure along the direction it was rolled, giving a plate genuinely different mechanical properties — particularly impact toughness and bend performance — along the rolling direction versus across it. This is a real, physical anisotropy that has no equivalent among the symmetric fasteners already on this site, which is exactly why critical structural or pressure-vessel applications specify which direction the rolling grain must run relative to the finished part’s primary stress direction.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our plate range is manufactured and verified for thickness tolerance and mechanical property compliance under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
A Note on Confirming Thickness Tolerance Class & Grain Orientation

Plate vs a Finished Fastener — Quick Reference
Confirming whether you genuinely need raw material for your own fabrication, or a finished component ready to install. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
| Aspect | Plate | Finished Fastener |
|---|---|---|
| Built-In Function | Genuinely none — raw stock | One predetermined mechanical function |
| Dimensional Tolerance | Genuinely wider, mill-standard | Tighter, closely controlled |
| Directional Properties | Genuinely anisotropic by rolling direction | Symmetric, no grain direction concern |
