Ball Valves
Why a Quarter Turn Genuinely Changes Everything
A ball valve uses a genuinely spherical, bored ball, with a through-hole matching the pipe bore, that rotates 90 degrees between fully open and fully closed. When the bore aligns with the pipe axis, flow passes essentially unrestricted straight through. A quarter turn rotates the ball so its solid, unbored portion blocks the bore entirely. This is genuinely different from a gate or globe valve’s linear, multi-turn stem motion, which gradually raises or lowers a disc or wedge through many full turns of the handwheel.
This 90-degree rotary motion creates a real, distinct operational advantage. Because full open or close needs only a quarter turn rather than the many turns a gate or globe valve requires, a ball valve can genuinely be actuated much faster — valuable for emergency shutoff applications where speed of closure matters. But this same speed is also a genuine, honest risk: a ball valve slammed shut too quickly on a fast-flowing liquid line can cause a real water hammer pressure spike, a hydraulic concern that a slower-closing gate or globe valve doesn’t create to the same degree.
A genuine, honest limitation follows from the ball’s geometry itself. A standard ball valve’s bore is not well suited to partial-open throttling or flow-regulating service, because the flow path past a partially rotated ball creates a highly non-linear, crescent-shaped opening. This leads to rapid, uneven erosion of the ball and seat at partial positions and unpredictable flow control. Ball valves are genuinely best suited to simple on/off, fully-open-or-fully-closed service — unlike a globe valve, which is purpose-built with a shaped disc specifically for gradual throttling control.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our ball valve range is manufactured and verified for ball bore alignment and seat sealing under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
A Note on Confirming Service Type & Closure Speed
Please confirm whether your service is genuinely on/off isolation or requires flow throttling, and your closure speed requirement, when requesting a quote — this determines whether a ball valve or a globe valve suits your line.

Ball Valve vs Globe Valve — Quick Reference
Confirming whether your service genuinely needs fast, simple on/off shutoff, or precise, gradual flow regulation. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
| Aspect | Ball Valve | Globe Valve |
|---|---|---|
| Actuation Motion | Genuinely a 90° quarter turn | Linear, multi-turn stem |
| Actuation Speed | Genuinely fast | Slower, more controlled |
| Throttling Suitability | Genuinely poor, non-linear opening | Purpose-built for throttling |
