ASTM A320 governs the family of low-temperature stud bolt grades — L1 through L7 and their variants — with A194 supplying the matching nut grades. Grade 3 is the A194 nut counterpart to A320 Grade L3, sitting within this same low-temperature, impact-tested family that also includes our better-documented Grade 7L/7ML, which is matched to A320 Grade L7/L7M.
What we’re confident about is the positioning: Grade 3, like Grade 7L, exists specifically for low-temperature and cryogenic bolted-joint service requiring Charpy impact verification at the design minimum metal temperature. What we’re less confident stating precisely is the exact base alloy composition for Grade 3 specifically — the L-grade family spans several different base steels across its range, and Grade 3/L3 is a less frequently specified member of that family compared to the L7/L7M grades we manufacture with full composition confidence.
