ASTM A194
Grade 8P
Stainless Steel Nuts
Why Nitrogen, Not Cold Working
Our Grade 8A and 8MA pages cover strain hardening — cold working an annealed nut to raise strength through a mechanical process. Grade 8P reaches higher strength through a genuinely different route: nitrogen alloying, the same strengthening principle behind the LN grade family we cover elsewhere on this site, where nitrogen increases strength in austenitic stainless through a mechanism separate from carbon or mechanical deformation entirely.
That distinction matters practically — a nitrogen-strengthened grade stays in a solution-annealed condition rather than being cold worked, which can matter for applications where the specific microstructural state of a strain-hardened part isn’t desired, or where the governing specification calls for annealed condition with elevated proof load specifically.
Grade 8P is a genuinely less common designation than our core Grade 8/8M/8C family, and while the nitrogen-strengthening principle is solid and well-established, we recommend confirming the exact base alloy composition and proof-load requirement against the current ASTM A194 standard text or your project specification before finalizing an order — this level of specificity is exactly where the governing document, not a general description, should be the final word.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and we’re glad to manufacture to this specification once the exact composition and property requirements are confirmed, verified under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
An Honest Note on This Specific Grade
Grade 8P is a considerably less commonly specified designation than our core Grade 8, 8M, and 8C family, and published, detailed reference material on its precise base alloy and proof-load requirements is genuinely more limited than for those widely used grades. We manufacture to this specification when a customer provides the exact composition and property requirements — either from the current ASTM A194 standard text or a project-specific data sheet — rather than relying on general description alone. If you’re specifying this grade, please share the governing document with your inquiry so we can confirm manufacturability accurately.
Where This Grade Genuinely Applies
Genuine Strength Without Cold Working
Nitrogen alloying raises proof load while keeping the part in a solution-annealed condition.
Correct Default Pairing With B8P Studs
Matched material and mechanical properties for straightforward assembly compatibility.
Project-Specific Specification
Typically called out by name on a specific project drawing or governing specification.
Verified Against Your Governing Document
We manufacture to the composition and property requirements you provide, confirmed before production.
Cold Working vs Nitrogen Strengthening
Grade 8A
Higher strength through cold working, a mechanical deformation process applied after annealing.
