Why FF-S-200 Is a Genuinely Different Fastener Class

A machine screw under FF-S-210 assumes a matching thread already exists — either tapped into the base material beforehand, or provided by a separate nut. A tapping screw under FF-S-200 does something the machine screw can’t: it creates its own mating thread as it’s driven, either by physically cutting away material (thread-cutting types) or by displacing and reforming material around the screw without removing any (thread-forming types). Self-drilling variants go a step further, combining a drill-point tip with the tapping thread so the screw can create its own pilot hole and thread in one operation.

That self-threading capability is exactly why tapping screws exist as a distinct fastener class — they eliminate a separate tapping or drilling step in production, which matters enormously in sheet metal, plastic, and wood assembly work where drilling and tapping every hole separately would be prohibitively slow. Choosing between thread-cutting, thread-forming, and self-drilling comes down to the base material and whether swarf (removed material) or stripped-out holes from repeated use are a genuine concern.
