Why This Part Has Three Designations
This part’s naming history now spans three eras. First, it was published as MIL-N-25027 under the original single-letter military prefix system. Then, the 1990s-era DoD standardization moved it to MIL-DTL-25027 as a Detail Specification. More recently, government agencies stepped back from actively maintaining many of these long-standing MS, AN, and MIL documents, and the aerospace industry — organized through the National Aerospace Standards (NASM) committee under SAE — took over publishing and revising them going forward, converting the designation to NASM25027 while carrying the underlying Type I and Type II requirements forward essentially unchanged.
For a buyer, all three designations point to the same qualified nut family. Which name appears on a given drawing usually just reflects when that drawing was created or last revised — older tooling packages may still cite MIL-N-25027, mid-generation documentation might cite MIL-DTL-25027, and current or recently updated drawings increasingly cite NASM25027 directly. A part manufactured correctly to any of the three should be functionally identical.
