Where FF-W-84 Fits in the Washer Family
Three federal washer specifications get referenced together often enough that it’s worth being clear about what each actually does. FF-W-100 covers plain flat washers whose whole job is spreading clamping load over a wider bearing area — no locking function, no finishing consideration, just load distribution. FF-W-92 covers helical spring and tooth lock washers, built specifically to resist self-loosening under vibration. FF-W-84 key washers solve a third, different problem entirely: providing a countersunk or dished bearing surface that a domed or oval screw head can seat into cleanly, rather than sitting proud and visible against a flat washer face.
That countersunk profile matters most where appearance and a flush, finished look are part of the requirement — cabinet hardware, finish trim, nameplate and panel attachment, and similar applications where an oval or round head screw needs to sit neatly rather than looking like it was bolted through with a standard flat washer underneath.
